Project Programme: January 2017
Bilstein is world renowned manufacturer of shock absorbers and suspension kits for the automotive industry, originating from Germany.
The freehold hub at Markham Vale, completed to a high specification, is bespoke to the specific operational requirements of Ferdinand Bilstein UK. Delivered on time and in
budget, the programme of works involved in-depth collaboration between Henry Boot Developments, Ferdinand Bilstein UK and principle contractor Bowmer & Kirkland who
appointed H E Barnes for M&E services. Practical completion was achieved in January 2017 with the distribution hub expected to become fully operational by January 2018 following
an extensive fit-out which H E Barnes were recommissioned to deliver directly for Bilstein.
The initial work for the distribution centre was presented to H E Barnes by way of full turnkey M&E services, from new build.
Mechanically, the focus was on installing smart Building Maintenance Systems which maximised the potential of the ventilation, heat recovery and air conditioning; due to the size of the space and multiuse of the offices and welfare areas. The main Warehouse area was predominately fitted out with racks, and was heated by LTHW fed Radiant Panels, to mirror their facility in Germany. These panels must be installed a minimum of 15.5m AFFL to ensure no impact on operations. There was also an extensive natural ventilation provision,
along with gas fired door heaters.
In terms of electrical works, MV power to substations and LV power were installed and supported by the adoption of a photovoltaic system to provide conventional and renewable energy supplies. General and Emergency lighting was installed across the warehouse, office and welfare areas with a preference for LED Energy saving luminaires and lighting controls that optimise daylight and motion sensors. Finally, enabling works to anticipate the IT, Data and telephony made way for Bilstein to specify their requirements on occupation. This included 2No.large Server Rooms, each with close control AV units.
Direct Works for Bilstein were a truly bespoke scope of works, allowing the manufacturer to install a series of automated manufacturing components, conveyor belts and operative workstations; all equipped with small power, lighting and data. This was all supported by HEB commissioning a backup generator and an impressive Comms room and associated data cabling. H E Barnes also completed the fit-out to the offices, kitchen and meeting rooms as per Bilstein’s requests. As part of the development obligations, the facility achieved a ‘Very Good’ BREEAM rating. To ensure Part L compliance and optimum energy efficiency, a PV Array was installed.
